========== CHAPTER 5 ==========

Having extinguished the first Prairie Dog incident, I took a deep breath and glared at the box.

Oblivious to my inner turmoil, the [Trait: Dark History] blinked. It was a signal, as if telling me to touch it.

Seeing that signal, countless dark histories flashed through my mind.

I was terrified that checking it would bring a wave of shame, but at the same time, curiosity pushed my hand forward.

Just what kind of dark history was it to become an Awakening Skill?

In the end, my hand pressed the glittering text.

And the second Prairie Dog incident broke out.

“Aaaack!!”

I swung my fist at the notification window.

But my hand passed through the notification window in vain.

“This! Why is this here! What is this?!”

As soon as I saw the contents of the trait, memories of my dark history, spanning from elementary school to eighth grade, came flooding back.

It was the memory of meticulously crafting settings and filling up notebooks with them.

The settings didn’t even stop at just one.

From perfect and beautiful settings to settings plastered with misfortune.

It was a market that had everything except what didn’t exist.

Fortunately, those notebooks were discarded upon high school graduation.

It was thanks to finding them while throwing away workbooks I had forgotten about.

Although my mind and eyes took a huge hit that day, it wasn’t a bad trade since I completely disposed of those cursed-notebook-like things.

In other words, it meant that by now, those papers had either rotted into a handful of dirt or burned away.

But the notification window in front of me was shoving that dark history at me in place of those papers.

“Cancel Awakening! Cancel!”

Even though I knew it wouldn’t work, I shouted to cancel the awakening with all my might.

Naturally, the notification window didn’t disappear.

Instead, the word ‘Fairy’, which was incredibly shameful, blinked and urged me to touch it.

I looked for a back or close button instead of canceling the awakening, but this notification window was incredibly unfriendly.

As if to say, ‘no take-backs’.

In the end, I had no choice but to raise my hand and press that word.

When I pressed the text ‘Fairy’, the notification window expanded and a description appeared before me.

First, I downed the remaining beer in the can in one go.

It was so terrible and miserable that I couldn’t look at it with a sane mind.

Why, how, for what reason did it write down someone else’s dark history settings in such detail?

Unless this system held a grudge against me, this couldn’t be happening.

I drained the beer can and looked at the notification window again.

Unfortunately, the alcohol, along with the intoxication, made memories of the past even more vivid.

Yes, memories of the time when I was deeply immersed in the setting of being a fairy around elementary school.

‘I am a fairy born in the spring when flowers are in full bloom. Because I am the fairy flowers love most, I am kind and pure to everyone. I was born with healing abilities that other fairies don’t have. Even villains covet my abilities, so everyone tries to protect me.’

“You crazy bastard……”

The memory of that setting, where I walked the path of a reverse harem, was unbearable.

If I had known it would come to this, I wouldn’t have done such a thing.

As I tore at my hair and barely suppressed a scream, the notification window popped up a new window.

My brow furrowed at the sudden demand of the notification window.

It doesn’t even let me cancel the awakening, yet it gives me so much to do.

Such complaints slowly raised their heads.

But at the same time, the word ‘Synchronization’ bothered me.

The word ‘Synchronization Rate’ was in the description, but I had no idea what effect it had.

I muttered the word that appeared on the notification window.

“Synchronization?”

And as if responding to my muttering, flower petals fell from above my head.

The petals, as if poured from a bucket, brushed past me and disappeared before hitting the floor.

“Whoa, you scared me.”

If they had piled up on the floor, I would have been furious, but not a single speck of pollen remained on the floor.

The only thing that changed was a rectangular graph in the corner of my vision indicating synchronization.

The synchronization graph was stuck at 0% and didn’t move.

Other than that, no particular changes were noticeable.

I looked around to see what had changed.

Then, silver hair flowing down past my shoulders caught my eye.

……Yes, silver.

Not just silver, but silver-colored.

“……”

Fear outweighed the wonder.

I swallowed hard and stood up quietly.

I quietly opened the bathroom door and went in, and the mirror greeted me.

As a bonus, the woman with silver hair and pink eyes reflected in the mirror also greeted me.

The clean, white face looked like me in some ways, but in others, it was a beauty that didn’t resemble me at all.

But the most absurd thing was the wings flapping behind my back.

“Wings?”

As if answering my question, dragonfly wings glowing faintly in five colors.

I cautiously raised my hand and touched the dragonfly wings.

Flutter―

When my hand touched the dragonfly wings, I felt a ticklish sensation along with the thin, rustling texture.

The wings moved on their own, fluttering to shake off the ticklishness.

The dark history setting I created over 10 years ago had now truly become me.

The face in the mirror smiled faintly.

Then, it calmly took out bleach from under the sink and poured it into a toothbrush cup.

“……”

And so, my bathroom became a little cleaner, and my awakening was sealed.

But aren’t promises meant to be broken, and seals meant to be broken?

I had never seen a seal work properly in my life.

So this was also a natural conclusion.

[Everything Store – Lettuce Kit]

“Ahem.”

While I was patting the lettuce into the kit and watering it, skepticism kept washing over me, but every time, curiosity kicked the skepticism away and took its place.

Still, since I’ve awakened, shouldn’t I test my abilities?

“Flower Spirits. Could you grow?”

I activated the only skill I could use right now.

Even after my whisper, there was no change for a while.

In an instant, embarrassment and shame washed over me, and my face flushed hot.

“Is this not how you use it…? Flower Spirits, grow? Grow, grow, Flower Spirits?”

Even though I muttered to myself and turned the lettuce kit this way and that, the lettuce seeds didn’t react.

It was fortunate that I was at home; if I had been outside, it would have been an incident that would make me want to crawl into a mouse hole.

Crack― Pop, pop-pop.

“Huh?”

Just then, I heard a sound that shouldn’t be heard inside the house.

The sound was coming from the corner of the living room.

I turned my gaze to check the corner of the living room and saw something green.

“Uh… uh?”

That shouldn’t be visible here, right?

The green thing was growing bigger and asserting itself.

Which meant it was taking root and breaking down the wall.

“Gasp, no!”

And this house was a monthly rental.

I ran over to the unknown plant growing out of the wall.

“No! Don’t grow! Don’t grow! Flower Spirits, don’t grow! This is a monthly rental!”

As I shouted in a hurry and grabbed the plant, it suddenly turned yellow and withered.

Then it was pulled right out following my touch.

But the wall had already crossed the river of no return.

“The wall… there’s a hole in it.”

A hole big enough for a mouse to crawl through was mocking me in black.

“What is this.”

Could it be that this happened because I was looking for a mouse hole?

I know it’s absurd, but there was no other reason.

I couldn’t even let out a dry laugh and stared at the gaping hole in the wall.

I didn’t want to learn the fact that I shouldn’t activate skills without clear instructions like this.

With listless hands, I threw the withered plant into the trash can and returned to the lettuce kit.

Instead of a vague activation like before, I activated the skill one more time, thinking of a clear command.

“Flower Spirits, grow enough to be picked and eaten.”

Then, the soil finally stirred.

Soon, fresh green lettuce pushed through the soil and revealed itself.

“Oh, it works. It works.”

I plucked the lettuce leaves and put them in a bowl.

Deciding on lettuce wraps for dinner, I checked the other skills.

The other two skills were both buffs and heals.

However, both of these skills had conditions attached.

‘Can be used when Synchronization Rate is 40% or higher.’

‘Consumes 90% of Synchronization Rate to perfectly restore the health of all allies.’

I raised my gaze to check the synchronization rate hanging at the edge of my vision.

I had no idea how to raise the number, which was still stuck at 0%.

‘Does it mean I should have a kind heart? Or a pure one?’

Should I try doing at least one thing?

I turned on my phone and went to the donation site that appeared at the top of the portal site.

One seemed too little, so I increased the amount and donated the price of about five lunch boxes.

A thank-you message appeared as the donation was completed, but I checked the synchronization first rather than that.

“What the.”

There’s no change.

Is it because I had a different purpose, not a purely kind heart?

“How on earth do I raise this? Is it something I can only raise by entering a dungeon? That condition isn’t written anywhere.”

Even after reading the notification window carefully again and looking through the help section, there was no mention of how to raise synchronization.

The most plausible hypothesis was still entering a dungeon.

“Hmm…”

Curiosity? Or shame?

That is the question.

I cautiously turned on my phone and typed my most burning question into the portal site.

And I gained a profound realization.

In this world, neither curiosity nor shame was important.

The most important thing is an unyielding annual salary!
